Would you lend a helping hand?

Today, at woodlands interchange, i saw a blind man with his stick.
He was walking very slowly and he seemed afraid as he walked..
I slowed down my pace and eventually paused and thought: "Should i go over and ask him if he needs help?"
I waited for my friend to catch up but my eyes were still fixed on him.
Finally my friend came over and i asked her,"You think we should help him? He like lost.., and he's like walking in the wrong direction (towards a wall)...."
Marie: "Huh.. But i scared he like fake one.. later he anyhow we how?"
Me:"IDIOT! People already walk so slow and like lost you still like that say!!!"
Marie: "But i really scared.. if fake how?"
And the both of us just stood there for a few moments, still unsure whether we should walk up to him.
Then, a young boy, around 16 or 17 years old near us ( I think he saw Marie and I dont know what to do..) walked to the blind man, held his hand and asked if he needed help. And he walked the blind man to the escalator......... Marie and I looked at them until they were out of our sights...

:( What will you guys do if you encounter such situation?
Or, how can you as a girl, help the poor blind man and at the same time, protect yourself?

Maybe i shouldnt hesitate, i should had just helped the blind man, right?
Afterall, it's just walking him to a bus station.. :(
